Overview
Béni Mellal is a rapidly growing city at the foot of the Middle Atlas, surrounded by orange groves and olive plantations. It's not on most tourist itineraries, but it serves as the gateway to the spectacular Cascades d'Ouzoud (Morocco's most impressive waterfalls) and offers an authentic Moroccan urban experience without any tourist infrastructure.
History
Béni Mellal is built around an ancient Berber settlement in the Tadla plain. The kasbah of Ras el-Ain (dating to the 17th century) overlooks the city from the hillside. The region is Morocco's most productive agricultural area — the Tadla-Azilal plain produces significant quantities of citrus, olives, and sugar beet.
Culture & Traditions
The weekly markets (Mondays) attract Berber farmers from throughout the region. The Tadla plain is Morocco's olive oil heartland — cooperative presses are active from November to January. The Aït Bou Guemez Valley (1.5h drive) is one of Morocco's last traditional Berber villages.
