Overview
Ifrane is unlike any other Moroccan city. Built by the French in 1929 as a European-style mountain resort at 1,665m altitude, it features chalet-style architecture, manicured parks, and streets clean enough to be surreal in a Moroccan context. Surrounded by cedar forests inhabited by Barbary macaques, it's a genuine escape from Moroccan heat and intensity.
History
Established in 1929 as a hill station for French colonial officials escaping summer heat. The town was designed entirely in a Norman-Swiss Alpine style and has maintained this character despite Moroccan independence. It's home to Al Akhawayn University, Morocco's only English-language international university. Snow is common from December to February.
Culture & Traditions
Ifrane is the rare Moroccan city with a ski culture — Michlifen ski resort is 20km away. The cedar forests of the Middle Atlas are habitat for the endangered Barbary macaque — feeding the monkeys at Azrou (15km away) is a popular activity. Trout fishing in the Oum er-Rbia river headwaters is a French-era tradition that continues.
