Overview
Nador is a rapidly growing port city on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, famous for the stunning Marchica Lagoon — a protected 25km saltwater lagoon separated from the sea by a thin sand bar. It's a transit hub for Moroccan diaspora returning from Europe and the gateway to the Eastern Rif mountain region.
History
Nador grew around the Spanish enclave of Melilla (2km away), which remains Spanish territory today. The city's modern form developed rapidly after independence. The Rif War (1920s) was fought in the surrounding mountains. The region experienced significant emigration to Europe — particularly the Netherlands and Belgium — from the 1960s onward.
Culture & Traditions
Nador is a Berber (Riffian) city with strong Tarifit language and Amazigh cultural identity. The proximity to Melilla creates a unique cross-border culture of shopping and commerce. The Marchica Lagoon has been subject to a major government resort development project.
