Overview
Volubilis is one of the world's most remarkably preserved Roman cities — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where mosaic floors, triumphal arches, and temple columns rise from the Moroccan plain in extraordinary condition. Founded in the 3rd century BC and later the Roman Empire's southernmost capital, it housed 20,000 people at its peak.
History
Founded by the Berber Mauretanian kingdom in the 3rd century BC, Volubilis became Rome's capital of the province of Mauretania Tingitana. At its peak (2nd–3rd century AD) it had a population of 20,000, a forum, basilica, triumphal arch, and dozens of mosaic-floored villas. The Romans withdrew in 285 AD; the city continued under Berber and later Arab control until the 11th century.
Culture & Traditions
Volubilis has no living traditions — it's an archaeological site. The nearby village of Moulay Idriss (3km) is Morocco's holiest city, built around the tomb of Idris I (founder of Morocco). Non-Muslims were banned from staying overnight in Moulay Idriss until 2005.
