Overview

Zagora sits in the Draa Valley where palm groves meet the beginning of the Sahara. Famous for the iconic sign reading 'Tombouctou: 52 jours' (Timbuktu: 52 days by camel), it was historically the last major oasis before the trans-Saharan crossing. Today it's the starting point for desert expeditions and one of Morocco's most atmospheric river valley drives.

History

Zagora was a stopping point for the trans-Saharan caravans that carried gold, salt, and slaves between Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa for centuries. The Saadian dynasty launched their conquest of the Songhai Empire (1591) from this region, crossing the Sahara with an army of 4,000. The Almoravid founder Abdallah ibn Yasin is buried nearby.

Culture & Traditions

The Draa Valley dates and saffron are among Morocco's finest agricultural products. Camel herding remains a practical tradition. The annual Tinfou dunes festival celebrates nomadic culture. Traditional Sahrawi blue robes are worn by local men.
